Like any outdoor environment Akaroa Harbour requires respect in many ways. Respect for its natural environment; respect for its ability to give you blue skies along with wind and rain; respect in the oceans ability to be calm and serene or stormy and dangerous. It might sound a little dramatic but really its quite simple - if you come here adequately prepared, you will have a fantastic experience in our amazing place. Have a read through the following information, pack your bags and get ready for a wonderful safari tour.
Safety Training At the start of every Akaroa Guided Kayak Safari trip we give you an introduction to kayaking and how to make the best of your trip with us. Its called a safety briefing and it takes about 20 minutes. It includes setting up your kayaks so that you have maximum comfort when paddling, teaching you the correct techniques for paddling, weather information and chart briefing so you know where we are going on the harbour. This safety session is really important to ensure your safety and enjoyment throughout the trip.
What should you bring? When packing remember that you are going into the outdoors. Pack smartly so that you can fit everything into the kayak storage space.
The space is small so if its not essential don't bring it along. We can't provide safe storage for you as we don't have the facility, also remember that anything you do bring along has a good chance of getting wet, so if its important or valuable to you think carefully !
On our guided day trip all you need to bring is a water bottle & snack. We provide hot drinks & cake.
If you want to snack during your adventure bring along your preferred snacks. Clothes and Personal Items
Clothing: Shorts, Long Sleeved Shirt, Sandals/Shoes, Hat, Towel, Swimwear, Warm change of clothes incase of changes in the weather and cold days (man made fibres are best or woollen - avoid cotton clothing if at all possible), Socks and Light Raincoat.
Sun Protection: Sunscreen (High Factor as the UV bounces back up at you off the water), Sunglasses, Sun Hat.
Other: Personal medication, Insect Repellant, Waterbottle, Camera (it may get wet ! So caution with expensive equipment - we will be taking photographs and video throughout the day with our specialised equipment so you can still purchase a record of your memorable Safari day).
